Club Times - Office & Bar/Cafe. Sunday - Thursday 09:00AM - 05:30PM Friday & Saturday 09:00AM - 07:30PM Watch this space for more opening times in the evening and monthly club nights Friday 17th Catamaran Racing It was a fairly calm and windless race last week but 10 boats participated which was great considering 5 of the regular racers were either at Wadi Bhi, resting after the rigors of the rough weather at DOSC the previous weekend or sailing back from DOSC. So it’s encouraging to see the fleet increasing and we also have new members joining and buying boats which is good news. The results after 4 races last week were Peter Eldridge and Peter Vandentillart came first, Conrad Schwindt and Chris were second and Jean Phillipe & Therese Dalem came third. There is racing this Friday with the briefing at 1:30PM and the forecast is to blow up to 21 knots at 1PM with gusts of 28 knots a complete contrast to last week and looking good.
Traditional Dhow Sailing Saturday 18th We’re expecting up to 70 dhows in the 43ft class to race this weekend over a course of about 10 nautical miles. The race is due to start at 2PM and the starting position will be determined on the day depending on the wind conditions. If anyone would like to watch the race from one of the support boats please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Sailing Lessons The 3rd week of the adult lessons will start at 2PM on Saturday, last week the students experienced light winds and sailed around a triangular course, they are all hoping for stronger winds this week, but it may be a case of be careful of what you wish for if the forecast is correct. If you are interested in taking lessons please let us know.
Rowing Lessons Learn to row session continue every Friday & Saturday early morning , please get in touch if you would like to join
Swimming Lessons As of March we will be offering morning and afternoon private swimming lessons in our outdoor pool with Debi Simcox a British ASA Certified swimming teacher. Places are limited, adults and children of all ages and abilities are welcome. Classes are for 30 minutes and priced at Dhs 150 or save 10% by booking a pack of 10 classes for Dhs 1350
Access & the Boat Show The boat show build up has started in earnest and the road leading to our beach is now closed, access will be through the first gate after the security and around the helipad. We will update you with any changes. We apologies for the inconvenience, the Dubai International Boat Show is the biggest and longest running boat show in the region, this will be its 20th year and they are planning many celebrations and we will keep you informed of these.
Rowing Shed & Boat Park There’s been a few bits and bobs moved around and climbed on in the rowing shed which is causing some concern for safety of the boats and perhaps the children who are playing in there. Please ask your children stay clear of the area and the boat park area for their own safety and to protect the members equipment.
Kitchen/Bar I’m happy to say that pizzas will be on the menu this weekend, 28cm round Margherita pizzas at 40/- or with extra toppings at 45/- and 15cm round Margherita pizzas at 25/- or 30/- with extra toppings. They are from Italy, wood fired and cooked in a pizza oven. Lal’s chicken curry sold out on Friday, but don’t worry if you missed it we plan to make it a regularly feature once a month or so, our sandwiches sold out too but no one went hungry or thirsty! We will have Heineken Beer in cans available this weekend too and Rose Wine, Guinness and Smirnoff Ice are still on special offer. Lal’s special for Friday is Spaghetti Bolognese
Sailing Party & Team building Last Saturday we had an interesting party, some members hired three lasers and invited family and friends for a party which consisted of relay races in the harbour and seemed like a lot of fun. We’ve got a group from Standard Chartered Bank booked in for a team building experience. 10 people 10 lasers, one hour to learn a bit about sailing and then trying to sail around a course. Should be interesting! That’s in March.
Take care in the channel Out at sea power gives way to sail but in a narrow channel such as ours it is not always possible. For small powerboats yes, they can stop fairly instantly but for bigger boats it is not always possible for them to stop quickly and they may not have room to maneuver so please take care and make sure to do everything you can to keep clear of vessels in the channel and don’t presume you have the right of way as bigger boats might not be able to stop in time or have room to take avoiding action.
Book Shelf & Toys Inside the clubhouse we have a bookshelf which is for the use of members to exchange books/magazines etc. It works on the basis of bring one take one. After seeing so many children down here at the weekend it would be good to have a children's section going to amuse them, so if you have any suitable books to exchange please bring them down this could be done with toys or games as well.
Stolen Property On a not so up beat note we had a thief at the club last week who stole a part from a club boat. The part wasn’t easily removed and needed 5 screws taken out before he/she could take it. I’ve reported the incident but please take care with all your own equipment. There is a plan in place to put surveillance cameras up to cover the entire property of DIMC and increase security with a view to have night security here at the beach and hopefully it will be in place soon. But in the meantime take care with your belongings.
Boat Park Everything in the boat park should now be marked clearly with a DIMC sticker. On Sunday we will start to move anything that is not marked to a holding area while we sort out why it is not marked, please help us with this project by identifying all your property with the correct ID.
